Canva Acquires Simtheory and Ortto — Accelerating Its Evolution From Design Platform to AI-Powered Work Operating System

Canva, the world's leading visual communication platform used by more than 265 million people each month, has announced the dual acquisition of Simtheory, an AI collaboration and agent management platform, and Ortto, a customer data and marketing automation company. Financial terms were not disclosed. Both companies were founded by brothers Chris and Mike Sharkey — previously co-founders of Stayz, which was acquired by Fairfax Media — who will join Canva in leadership roles across its AI and marketing technology teams. The acquisitions are positioned as a pivotal step in Canva's transformation from a design tool into the system where teams handle their entire work lifecycle — from the spark of an idea through to creating, publishing, measuring, and optimising — without leaving the platform. A major product unveiling is planned at Canva Create on 16 April 2026.

"Simtheory accelerates our evolution from a design platform with AI tools to an AI platform with design and productivity tools at its core. At the same time, Ortto strengthens our ability to power the entire marketing and content lifecycle through Canva Grow, from planning and creating to publishing and optimising across every channel."

Simtheory: From AI Generation to AI Execution

Simtheory is an agentic AI and multi-model collaboration platform built to move teams beyond AI as a content generator into AI as an execution layer. The platform allows teams to build custom AI assistants that understand their business context, set up multi-model agentic systems, and manage tasks across workflows — including, for example, autonomously pulling and qualifying sales leads from Salesforce directly into a spreadsheet. Canva frames Simtheory's acquisition as addressing the gap that has emerged as AI tools proliferated: generating something is only one step in a much bigger process, and for most teams, bringing an idea to life is still too complex and disconnected — spread across too many tools, tabs, and workflows. Simtheory was built to solve exactly that. Its integration into Canva will be previewed at Canva Create on 16 April and is described by Canva as the foundation of "the biggest transformation in Canva's history" — shifting Canva from a design platform with AI tools to an AI platform with design and productivity tools at its core.

Ortto: Full-Stack Marketing Automation for Canva Grow

Ortto — formerly known as Autopilot — is a customer data platform combined with end-to-end marketing automation, trusted by more than 11,000 customers across 190 countries. Before the acquisition, Ortto had raised $46 million (USD $32 million) from investors including Salesforce Ventures, Rembrandt Venture Partners, and Blackbird Ventures. The platform enables teams to design and orchestrate customer journeys across email, SMS, push notifications, in-app messaging, forms, and surveys — with an event-driven architecture and no-code integrations that make it straightforward to connect and activate customer data in real time. Ortto's acquisition directly strengthens Canva Grow — Canva's tool for asset creation and performance measurement — extending its capability from content creation into full-lifecycle campaign execution, measurement, and optimisation. Ortto's 40-person team will continue building and supporting the standalone Ortto product while contributing their expertise to Canva's marketing suite. Existing Ortto customers were told by the Sharkeys that day-to-day operations, account structure, pricing, workflows, and support will not change.

Part of an Accelerating Acquisition Strategy

The Simtheory and Ortto acquisitions are part of a sustained acquisition run by Canva as it builds out its end-to-end work platform. Recent acquisitions include Doohly (digital outdoor advertising, two weeks prior); Cavalry (animation) and MangoAI (ad performance improvement), announced six weeks prior; and MagicBrief (marketing intelligence, January 2025). Together, these additions move Canva progressively further into the full marketing and content lifecycle — from ideation and design through to deployment, measurement, and optimisation. The dual acquisition also follows Canva's October 2025 unveiling of its Creative Operating System — the company's largest product evolution to date at that point — which introduced upgraded video tools, the Canva Grow marketing engine, and a new Canva Business tier.

Key Takeaways

  • Canva (265 million monthly users) has made a dual acquisition — Simtheory (agentic AI and multi-model collaboration platform) and Ortto (customer data platform + marketing automation; 11,000+ customers; 190 countries; formerly Autopilot; raised $46M from Salesforce Ventures, Rembrandt Venture Partners, and Blackbird Ventures). Financial terms undisclosed. Both founded by brothers Chris and Mike Sharkey, who join Canva in AI and marketing technology leadership roles.
  • The strategic pivot: Canva is transitioning from a design platform with AI tools into an AI platform with design and productivity tools at its core — the system where teams do all their work from start to finish, from idea to campaign optimisation, without switching platforms. Simtheory addresses the agentic execution layer; Ortto addresses the customer data and campaign automation layer.
