SpineGuard Secures European Patent for Automatic Bone Breach Detection in Robotic Surgery

SpineGuard (FR0011464452 – ALSGD) (Paris:ALSGD), a pioneer in DSG® (Dynamic Surgical Guidance) local conductivity sensing technology, announced that its patent application for algorithms enabling automatic detection of breaches during bone drilling has received an intention to grant from the European Patent Office. This innovation enhances the safety of bone drilling power tools with a DSG-enabled active safety stop.

“On the heels of our US allowed patent last July, this European validation for a technically complementary patent is timely to support ongoing strategic discussions with the industry, particularly regarding applications to power drilling tools and robots,” said Stéphane Bette, Deputy CEO and cofounder of SpineGuard.

SpineGuard has built a significant intellectual property portfolio that currently includes 11 patent families totaling 72 patents and applications, as well as 3 trademarks, across major regions including Europe, USA, China, and Japan. This new patent, soon to be granted, is the company’s first in Europe related to the use of DSG technology in smart surgical tools.

Co-designed and validated with the ISIR (Institute for Intelligent Systems and Robotics) of Sorbonne University, CNRS, and INSERM, the patent describes algorithms that analyze DSG measurements to determine in real time a potential breach during bone drilling. Experimental results shared by SpineGuard in March 2023 demonstrated that 100% of blindly executed drillings could be stopped within a clinically safe corridor — 2 millimeters on each side of the interface between bone and spinal canal, with a mean distance of 0.7 millimeters.
