India's digital payments ecosystem is preparing for its next phase of technological development as the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) expands its focus beyond traditional payment infrastructure. The organisation has established a wholly owned technology subsidiary, NPCI Tech Solutions Limited (NTSL), to drive innovation in artificial intelligence, blockchain and digital financial infrastructure.
The new subsidiary will serve as NPCI's dedicated technology and innovation arm, supporting the development of capabilities across financial services and India's digital public infrastructure programmes.
NPCI Creates Dedicated Technology and Innovation Arm
NTSL will focus on emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, blockchain, digital financial infrastructure and global capability centre services.
According to NPCI, the subsidiary will develop technological capabilities beyond the organisation's core payments mandate. It will also provide technology services for several digital public infrastructure programmes in India.
The establishment of NTSL reflects NPCI's intention to build a broader technology ecosystem that can support the changing requirements of financial institutions and digital services.
Vishal Kanvaty Appointed as NTSL CEO
NPCI has appointed Vishal Kanvaty, its Chief Technology Officer, as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the new subsidiary.
Kanvaty has been associated with NPCI for nearly a decade and brings experience in developing and managing technology supporting India's digital payments infrastructure.
NPCI CEO Dilip Asbe highlighted the opportunities created by emerging technologies, stating that advancements in AI and other technologies are opening new possibilities across digital infrastructure and financial services.
Expanding Beyond UPI and Traditional Payment Systems
NPCI operates several important retail payment and settlement systems, including the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).
The creation of NTSL signals an expansion of its technology ambitions beyond its established payment operations.
The new subsidiary is expected to support innovation across financial services and digital public infrastructure, although NPCI has not detailed specific commercial products, project timelines or implementation plans for the unit.
NTSL is also NPCI's fourth wholly owned subsidiary, following NPCI International Payments, NPCI Bharat BillPay and NPCI BHIM Services.
Why AI and Blockchain Matter for India's Fintech Ecosystem
Artificial intelligence and blockchain are attracting growing interest across financial services.
AI can support areas such as fraud detection, customer assistance, risk analysis and operational efficiency. Blockchain technology can offer new approaches to secure data sharing, transaction records and digital infrastructure.
For an organisation operating payment systems at a national scale, exploring these technologies could create opportunities to improve reliability, security and the efficiency of financial services.
However, their adoption will require careful attention to data protection, cybersecurity, regulatory requirements and system performance.
What This Means for India's Digital Finance Future
NPCI's decision to establish a dedicated technology subsidiary represents an important organisational step in India's fintech development.
As digital payments and financial services become increasingly technology-driven, the ability to develop and manage advanced infrastructure will be critical.
Through NTSL, NPCI aims to strengthen its innovation capabilities and contribute to the wider digital public infrastructure ecosystem.
The subsidiary's future projects and partnerships will help determine how effectively these ambitions translate into practical applications for India's financial services industry.
