Tencent is strengthening its position in global financial technology through expanded cross-border payment partnerships and new artificial intelligence applications. At Hong Kong FinTech Week 2026, the company showcased developments in payment interoperability, fraud detection, investment research and agentic finance.

The event, held in Hong Kong, highlighted Tencent's efforts to connect international payment networks while introducing AI-powered solutions designed to improve financial services.

Connecting More International Payment Networks

Tencent has opened its Weixin Pay ecosystem to more international users, connecting over 60 overseas wallets from 16 countries and regions to facilitate payments for visitors in mainland China.

The company is also deepening partnerships with global card networks, banks, remittance institutions and cross-border e-commerce platforms.

During the event, TenPay Global, Tencent's cross-border payment platform, signed separate memoranda of understanding with Mastercard and UnionPay International. These agreements followed an earlier memorandum with Visa.

The partnerships aim to strengthen cross-border payment connectivity and explore opportunities in agentic commerce.

AI-Powered Fraud Detection Improves Payment Security

Tencent also highlighted how artificial intelligence and data analytics are being used to strengthen financial security.

Forest Lin, Corporate Vice President of Tencent and Head of Tencent Financial Technology, discussed the company's payment ontology model, which analyses payment network activity to identify abnormal transaction patterns.

According to Tencent, the technology has reduced the time required to identify new scam patterns from weeks to days or even hours, while minimising unnecessary interruptions for legitimate users.

This development reflects the growing role of AI in identifying suspicious financial activity and improving fraud prevention.

Introducing RENA: An AI Research Agent for Investors

Another major highlight was RENA, short for "Read Everything, Notice Alpha", an AI-powered research agent designed for investors.

The tool proactively gathers and analyses information based on an individual's investment portfolio to help identify potential opportunities more quickly.

Tencent emphasised that RENA supports investment research rather than replacing human decision-making. Final judgments and investment decisions remain with the user.

The introduction demonstrates how AI agents are moving beyond basic information retrieval towards more proactive financial research and analysis.

Making Cross-Border Travel Payments More Convenient

Through its "Pay in China Version 2.0" feature, TenPay Global is extending overseas wallet integrations beyond payments to digital lifestyle services.

International visitors can use their existing wallet applications to order meals, book rides and purchase flight and train tickets while travelling in mainland China.

Tencent reported that Vietnam's MoMo experienced a 290% increase in average daily transactions after introducing the feature for users travelling to China.

This development demonstrates how payment interoperability can support broader digital services and improve the experience of international travellers.

Hong Kong Advances Its Agentic Finance Framework

The event also highlighted Hong Kong's efforts to establish governance standards for AI-driven financial services.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority launched Project SAGE (Securing Agentic Finance with Governance and Enablement) and established an Agentic Finance Expert Group.

WeChat Pay HK and Tencent Cloud were selected as members to work with the HKMA and industry stakeholders on standards and governance for the responsible development of agentic finance.

Tencent Cloud also showcased financial technology solutions, including electronic KYC, risk control systems, WorkBuddy and its global AI infrastructure network. The company stated that it serves more than 10,000 financial institution customers worldwide.

The Future of Connected and AI-Powered Finance

Tencent's announcements at Hong Kong FinTech Week reflect two important developments in financial technology: increasingly connected international payment networks and the growing use of AI agents in financial operations.

As financial institutions explore automation, fraud prevention and personalised financial services, interoperability and governance will remain essential.

Tencent's expanding partnerships and AI initiatives demonstrate how technology providers are working to build a more connected financial ecosystem while addressing the security and operational challenges of digital finance.
