UPI Records Its Strongest Month Yet

India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) crossed a significant milestone in October 2026, with its average daily transaction value exceeding ₹1 lakh crore for the first time.

According to data from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI processed 25.47 billion transactions worth ₹31.53 lakh crore during the month. This represents a 23% year-on-year increase in transaction volume and 16% growth in transaction value.

The platform recorded an average of 822 million transactions daily, while the average daily transaction value reached ₹1,01,707 crore.

Festive Season Drives Digital Payment Activity

October's record performance coincided with India's festive shopping season, when consumer spending typically increases across retail, e-commerce, electronics, apparel and other categories.

The average daily transaction value rose from ₹97,913 crore in September to ₹1,01,707 crore in October, an increase of approximately 3.9%.

Daily transaction volumes also increased from 802 million to 822 million during the same period.

The monthly figures show continued expansion in digital payment activity, with UPI handling both routine everyday purchases and larger consumer transactions.

Monthly Transaction Volume Crosses 25 Billion

October marked the first time UPI processed more than 25 billion transactions in a single month. Its total transaction value also crossed ₹30 lakh crore for the first time.

Merchant Discount Rate Debate Continues

The latest growth comes amid discussions around the proposed merchant discount rate (MDR) framework for select UPI person-to-merchant transactions.

MDR is a fee paid by merchants to banks and payment service providers for processing digital payments. The proposed framework has attracted attention because of its potential impact on merchant costs and the long-term commercial sustainability of the payments ecosystem.

NPCI had deferred the implementation, originally scheduled for October 15, until after Diwali. A revised implementation date is yet to be communicated.

The debate highlights the challenge of maintaining affordable digital payments while ensuring that the organisations supporting the infrastructure have sustainable revenue models.

UPI's Expanding Role in India's Digital Economy

UPI's October performance demonstrates the scale that India's real-time payments infrastructure has reached. Its growing adoption across online and offline transactions is changing how consumers pay businesses and transfer money.

The next phase of growth will depend not only on transaction volumes but also on maintaining reliability, security, merchant acceptance and a sustainable payments ecosystem.

As digital payments become increasingly embedded in everyday commerce, UPI's record October figures mark another important milestone in India's fintech development.
